We’re already a few weeks into 2025, and as January comes to a close, you might be feeling the pace pick up after the initial buzz of the new year. January tends to bring bold resolutions and fresh starts. But by the time February hits, reality starts to set in. Goals can feel a little fuzzier, and change–a constant in leadership–can start setting in more and more.
If you’re like many executive leaders I work with, you may be asking yourself questions like, “What will this year bring, and how can I steer it in the right direction?” As we all know, change is inevitable. But this doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing.
So here’s the big question:
What is actually within your control right now, and how can you make the most of it?
While we can’t control everything that is thrown our way, we can control our mindsets, how we plan and prepare, how we show up, and what we choose to prioritize. Tackling change with the right approach can turn a challenging situation into an opportunity for growth and learning. It is a time to lean into what is possible, to embrace lessons of the past, and to take intentional and well-planned steps toward the future.
Types of Changes Executive Leaders Face
As an executive leader, you are no stranger to change. Although the changes we encounter are unique to our workplaces, team situations, and personal circumstances, they tend to fall into a handful of general categories. Examples of these include:
- Organizational Restructuring: Navigating shifts in company structure, leadership roles, or mergers and acquisitions.
- Team Dynamics: Managing diverse teams across different working styles, work situations (e.g., in-office, hybrid, remote), generations, and cultures
- Industry Evolution: Adapting to and staying ahead of rapid technological advancements, emerging trends, technologies, or regulatory changes (e.g., AI integration, sustainability initiatives)
- Crisis Management: Leading during times of economic downturn, public relations issues, or unexpected global events (e.g., recalibrating priorities during supply chain disruptions)
- Personal Growth: Balancing evolving professional demands with shifting personal milestones and aspirations (e.g., becoming a parent, planning for retirement, pursuing continuing education)ned from those experiences to make more informed decisions for the future.
These changes can be daunting to face. However, by focusing on what is within your control, you can turn these challenges into opportunities. Instead of revolving around fear and anxiety, change can become a chance for you to learn, grow, and demonstrate adaptability, all while inspiring confidence and paving the way to long-term success.
Why Change Can Be Challenging for Executive Leaders
Change is hard for everyone. But for leaders, the stakes can feel especially high. You’re not just navigating your own journey during seasons of change. You’re also guiding your team through uncertainty and making decisions that affect the organization, all while trying to stay aligned with your goals and values. It can be easy to feel pulled in too many directions or to second-guess your choices.
Leaders also often feel pressure to have all the answers and to project unwavering confidence despite navigating unknowns. Add to this the fast pace of modern work, and it’s no wonder many leaders end up feeling overwhelmed. The good news is that there are ways to help you tackle change so that you can experience success despite the obstacles.
What Does Successfully Taking Control of Change Look Like?
Contrary to what you may think, taking control doesn’t mean having all the answers. It means staying grounded, adaptable, and intentional about how you lead. When you are able to successfully take control of what you’re able to during times of change and uncertainty, you will see a ripple effect of positive outcomes. You will see effects such as:
- Better Decision-Making: You will approach challenges with a focused and values-driven mindset instead of one based on pressure and fear.
- Enhanced Team Morale: Your clarity and calmness will inspire confidence in those around you, including your team.
- Improved Organizational Outcomes: A clear and adaptable leadership approach can drive productivity, innovation, and cohesion across your team and organization.
- Increased Personal Fulfillment: You will find a greater sense of purpose and satisfaction knowing you’ve navigated change thoughtfully and intentionally.

Strategies & Tools for Dealing with Change: 4 Helpful Tips
So how do you take control of what you can during seasons of change? I will explain four helpful strategies within your control that you can focus on to get started.
1. Lean into Self-Awareness
Take the initiative to learn more about yourself and your leadership style. Understanding your strengths, weaknesses, and triggers is key to navigating change effectively. Make time for regular assessment, self-reflection, and constructive feedback from others.
2. Prioritize Clear Communication
Develop a communication plan for when change happens. Change often leads to uncertainty, but communication can help make this uncertainty easier to tackle. Be transparent with your team, share your vision, and create space for open dialogue. Make sure to practice active listening to ensure team members feel heard and valued during transitions.
3. Strengthen Resilience
How you choose to care for yourself during seasons of change is something you can actively prepare for and apply. Strive daily to build habits that strengthen your emotional and mental well-being. This could include mindfulness practices, journaling, deep breathing exercises, regular exercise, or carving out time to rest and recharge.
4. Seek Out Support
Build a strong support network by connecting with mentors and coaches, peers, and professional groups who can provide guidance and encouragement. Workshops, conferences, and webinars are another way to seek out support to help you stay ahead and continue making progress. While training opportunities such as these are more general options you can pursue, partnering with mentors and coaches will help you create more personalized strategies for tackling challenges and seizing opportunities unique to your situation.
Regardless of what you choose, investing in your growth through support equips you with the tools to lead effectively during times of change.
How Will You Take Control of the Things You Can?
As you think about the year ahead, ask yourself: What steps will I take within my own situation to embrace change with purpose? What factors can I control, and how can I make sure I stay focused on those instead of the factors beyond my control?
Consider setting a few specific goals that align with your vision for 2025. Write them down, and revisit them regularly to stay on track. Come back to this article if you ever feel stuck and need a refresher on how to get back on track.
